New Monoamine Oxidase Inhibiting(MAOI) Antidepressants

Abstract
The MAOLs were introduced as antidepressants in the 1950s at about the same times as the tricyclic compounds. but they have become secondary drugs relative to the tricyclic antidepressant due to side effects. such as hepatotoxicity and cheese
effects.
and believes that MAOls were less effective than tricyclic antidepressants in the case of psychotic or endogeneous depression. As a consequence, these drugs were usually indicated as second choices after failures of previous medications or for
atypical
depressions or anxious depression. In Korea. MAOls have not been used clinically because of traditional dietary characteristics with general using of high tyramine containing foods in addition to above reasons.
But recent studies suggested that there was a good response to MAOls in patients with a various psychiatric and neurologic disorders. and if used judiciously they could be used safely. And also. the development of new MAOls. with major advantages
over
the traditional compounds. specficity and reversibity, renewed the interest in the MAOLs.
This article provides a clinically oriented update and overview on the use of MAOls, emphasiging newer developments regarding this class of drugs. especially new MAOls.
